Why Specialized Care Matters

Understanding Teen Mental Health

According to recent studies, an increasing number of teenagers are grappling with mental health issues, ranging from depression and anxiety to more complex conditions such as bipolar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorders. At Interval Teen, we recognize the critical nature of addressing these challenges early and effectively. Teen mental health therapy not only focuses on alleviating symptomatic distress but also aims to empower teens with coping strategies and resilience for lifelong wellness.

Why Specialized Care Matters

Adolescence is a period of significant physical, emotional, and psychological development. It’s also a time when individuals are particularly vulnerable to mental health issues. This vulnerability underscores the need for specialized care tailored to the unique challenges and experiences of teenagers. At Interval Teen, our therapeutic approach is designed specifically for young women aged 13-17, ensuring a supportive and understanding environment that fosters healing and growth.

Our Approach to Therapy

Individualized Care

Every teen has a unique story, and their therapy should reflect that. At Interval Teen, we begin with a thorough assessment to understand each resident’s needs, strengths, and personal history. This allows us to tailor our teen mental health therapy program, integrating evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)-informed therapy, to best support each individual.

Family Involvement

An integral part of teen mental health therapy is family involvement. We believe healing occurs in a systemic context, and as such, our program includes family therapy and skill-building groups. This not only aids in the teen’s recovery but also strengthens familial bonds, ensuring a supportive environment at home.

Experiential Therapy

Healing doesn’t just happen in the therapy room. Our program includes a wide range of experiential activities such as yoga, equine therapy, and martial arts. These activities are not only therapeutic but also allow teens to discover new interests and build confidence in their abilities.

Challenges Addressed

Our program is equipped to support teens facing a variety of mental health challenges. From anxiety and depression to trauma and stress-related disorders, our skilled clinical team provides comprehensive care. We also specialize in addressing issues such as self-harm behaviors, gender identity issues, and social isolation, ensuring a holistic approach to wellness.

The Healing Journey

Stabilization

The first step in our program is often stabilization, creating a safe and supportive environment where teens can begin their healing journey. This phase focuses on managing acute symptoms and establishing a routine within our comfortable and secure facility.

Skill Building

Building resilience is key to long-term wellness. Our program emphasizes skill-building, teaching teens how to navigate difficult emotions, foster healthy relationships, and cope with life’s challenges. These skills are critical in preventing relapse and promoting sustained recovery.

The Healing Journey

What Therapy Works Best for Adolescent Mental Health?

At Interval Teen, we’ve found that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to this question, because every teenager is unique. However, evidence-based practices like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) have shown promising results. CBT helps teens understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, empowering them to challenge and change negative thought patterns. DBT, on the other hand, emphasizes regulating emotions and building resilience against distress. Imagine a scenario where a teenager feels overwhelmed with anxiety before a test. Through CBT, they learn to identify and challenge their belief that “failing this test means I’m a failure,” replacing it with more balanced thoughts. Does your teen face challenges that you think might be addressed with these approaches?

What Is Behavioral Therapy for 14 Year Olds?

Behavioral therapy for 14-year-olds focuses on identifying and modifying harmful behaviors through a system of rewards and consequences. At Interval Teen, this approach is tailored to young teenagers by incorporating engaging activities that resonate with their interests and developmental stage. A key aspect is involving the teen in setting their therapy goals and identifying rewards that motivate them. For instance, a 14-year-old struggling with time management might work with their therapist to develop a daily schedule, with the incentive being extra screen time or a special outing for consistently following it. By involving them in the process, teens feel empowered and more invested in their behavior change journey.

How Does Family Involvement Enhance Teen Mental Health Therapy?

Family involvement is fundamental to the success of teen mental health therapy. At Interval Teen, we believe that healing occurs within the context of relationships, making family participation crucial. When families engage in therapy, they gain insights into their teen’s struggles, learn effective communication strategies, and understand how to support their loved one’s healing journey. Imagine a scenario where a teenager feels misunderstood by their parents. Through family therapy, both the teen and their parents can express their feelings in a safe environment, leading to greater empathy and strengthened familial bonds. Have you considered how participating in your teen’s therapy could bring about positive change in your family dynamics?

Can Experiential Therapy Help Teens Build Confidence?

Yes, experiential therapy can be a powerful tool in helping teens build confidence. At Interval Teen, we incorporate activities like equine therapy, yoga, and martial arts into our program. These activities provide teens with opportunities to step out of their comfort zones, face challenges, and achieve success in a supportive setting. For example, through equine therapy, teens learn to communicate assertively and establish trust with the horses, which can translate into improved self-esteem and interpersonal skills. Many teens discover new passions and talents, further boosting their confidence. Have you noticed areas in which your teen could benefit from increased confidence?

What Challenges Are Specifically Addressed in Teen Mental Health Therapy?

In our teen mental health therapy program at Interval Teen, we address a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, stress-related disorders, self-harm behaviors, gender identity issues, and social isolation. Each challenge requires a nuanced approach. For instance, with anxiety, therapy might focus on developing coping strategies and resilience, while treatment for trauma might include trauma-focused interventions such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Our skilled clinical team ensures that the therapeutic approach is personalized to meet each teen’s specific needs, fostering a holistic path to wellness. Are there particular challenges your teen is facing that you’re seeking support for?

CEO / Chairman of the board

Our Founder - Steve Zamarripa

Steve’s Story

I started La Ventana Treatment Programs in 2007 as a personal journey looking inward for answers on a more meaningful life.  I sold my previous business in 2005 and started my journey on giving back and helping others suffering from mental health illness and substance abuse. I had an awakening and simply wanted to create a place “to help” by providing a platform where professionals and dedicated staff could work their magic towards helping people.

Growing up, my family was plagued with mental health issues and alcoholism where nobody could express their feelings and I was taught that boys don’t cry ever and did not shed a tear myself until my early forties when I divorced and I cried for my three children. I learned to survive instead of learning how to live and that survival mode where I protected myself and did not trust anybody carried me through most of my adulthood.

Mental health issues were everywhere in my life growing up but in the 1960s and 1970s there was very little discussion around mental health and facilities to help people struggling were almost nonexistent.  Most of my childhood was filled with fear. I lived in fear of my father, in fear of family secrets, in fear of emotions and feelings and in fear of people in general. I remember being afraid of many things as a child and fear was part of growing up which led to establishing survival techniques to live.

Interval Teen was the brainchild of Rebekah Sanchez Norton, from our own clinical leadership team, and I enthusiastically  supported it when she presented it to me. I realized how my own life would have been healthier and happier had there been an Interval Teen when I was growing up.

I have learned many things since opening my first mental health facility in 2007 and I have grown tremendously as a person.  I have realized that in my family I believe there are no crimes beyond forgiveness. I have forgiven my father and my mother for their crazy dysfunctional lifestyle and for any mistakes made in raising their children. I have forgiven myself for the crimes I committed on my family, for my inability to love and for the hurt I caused so many people throughout my journey.

I am now a loved man capable of receiving love, giving love and expressing love which is more than enough for my life. This has been the greatest achievement in my recovery thus far.

I provide the community with Interval Teen in hopes of helping young women face their fears, work on their mental health issues and become strong women for the future of our society.
