Understanding Teen Girls’ Mental Health

As a leading organization dedicated to promoting teen mental health in Thousand Oaks, Interval Teen has a particular focus on the emotional well-being of young women aged 13-17. In recent times, discussions surrounding teen girls mental health have become more critical than ever. The mental health challenges faced by teen girls are unique and multifaceted, requiring specialized attention and care. At Interval Teen, we strive to understand and address these unique needs, providing a nurturing environment where young women can thrive.

Key Factors Affecting Teen Girls’ Mental Health

Navigating Social Media

The digital age has brought about significant challenges, especially for teen girls. Social media, while being a platform for connection, often contributes to issues related to self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. Interval Teen actively engages in discussions about the impact of social media, aiming to help our residents develop a healthier relationship with these platforms.

Pandemic Strain on Emotional Well-being

The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for teen girls, exacerbating feelings of isolation and loneliness. At Interval Teen, we’ve placed an increased emphasis on creating a supportive community that counters these feelings of isolation, ensuring that each teen feels understood and valued.

Strategies for Support

At Interval Teen, we believe in a holistic approach to teen girls mental health. This includes integrating various therapeutic methods tailored to meet the individual needs of each resident. Our program highlights the importance of experiential activities, therapy sessions, and academic support, ensuring a well-rounded strategy for mental health care.

Experiential Activities for Healing

  • Yoga and Equine Therapy: Fostering a connection with one’s body and nature, promoting mindfulness and emotional balance.
  • Kayaking and Martial Arts: Building physical strength and resilience, translating into emotional stamina.
  • Music Lab: Encouraging creative expression as a form of emotional release and self-discovery.

The Role of Education

Academic struggles can often contribute to stress and anxiety among teens. At Interval Teen, we offer an academic program tailored to the individual needs of our residents, ensuring that education supports rather than hinders their mental health journey.

Family Involvement

Healing does not occur in isolation. It’s a collaborative journey involving the teen, their family, and professional caregivers. Interval Teen places a great emphasis on family therapy and skill-building groups, recognizing that a supportive home environment is crucial for lasting wellness.

The Importance of Peer Support

Peer relationships play a significant role in a teen’s life. At Interval Teen, we foster a sense of community and mutual support among our residents, encouraging them to empower each other through their healing journeys. This peer support system is vital for building resilience and fostering a positive self-image.

Treatment Options

Individual and Group Therapy

We provide both individual and group therapy sessions, facilitating personal growth as well as the development of social skills in a group setting. This combination ensures that each teen receives personalized care while also benefiting from the support of their peers.

Family Therapy

Understanding that the family unit plays a critical role in a teen’s mental health, we offer family therapy sessions. These sessions aim to improve communication and resolve conflicts, ensuring that the family can serve as a pillar of support.

The Role of Education

How Does Social Media Affect Teen Girls’ Mental Health?

It’s a question we hear often at Interval Teen. Social media can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it offers unparalleled opportunities for connection and self-expression. On the other, it can lead to comparisons, cyberbullying, and feelings of inadequacy. From our experience, the impact largely depends on how it’s used. For instance, teens who follow accounts that inspire and uplift them can have a positive experience. However, constant exposure to unrealistic beauty standards and curated lives can foster negative self-esteem and anxiety. It’s crucial to guide our teens on healthy social media practices, such as setting boundaries and following content that aligns with their real values.

How Has the COVID-19 Pandemic Affected Teen Girls’ Mental Health?

The pandemic has been tough on everyone, but teen girls have faced unique challenges. The isolation from peers, disruption of routines, and overall uncertainty have heightened feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. At Interval Teen, we’ve observed that these conditions have underscored the importance of resilience and adaptability. Encouragingly, we’ve also seen incredible strength and persistence among our teens as they navigate these uncharted waters. It’s a testament to the fact that, with the right support, our youth can turn challenges into opportunities for growth.

Why Is Family Involvement Important in Therapy for Teen Girls?

Family plays a pivotal role in a teen’s mental health journey. It’s not just about the individual; it’s about the system around them. Family therapy sessions provide a safe space to address conflicts, improve communication, and strengthen connections. This holistic approach ensures that healing is not only focused on the teen but encompasses the entire family dynamic. After all, a supportive home environment is crucial for lasting wellness. It’s about building a foundation where each member feels heard, valued, and understood.

How Essential Is Peer Support in Teen Mental Health?

Peer support is invaluable. Adolescence is a time when connections with peers become increasingly important. At Interval Teen, fostering a sense of community among our residents is a priority. There’s something incredibly powerful about knowing you’re not alone in your struggles. Peer groups provide a unique environment where teens can share experiences, challenges, and victories. This mutual support fosters resilience, boosts self-esteem, and promotes a positive self-image. It’s about creating a circle of support that understands because they’ve been there, too.

What Role Do Experiential Activities Play in Healing?

Experiential activities are a core part of our program at Interval Teen. Activities like yoga, equine therapy, and kayaking are more than just hobbies; they’re therapeutic. For instance, equine therapy fosters mindfulness, empathy, and emotional awareness. These activities encourage our teens to connect with themselves and their surroundings in a meaningful way. It’s about healing through doing, learning new skills, and finding joy and purpose in the process. Plus, these experiences often lead to discovering passions that can last a lifetime.

Choosing the right treatment program is crucial. At Interval Teen, we stand out because of our comprehensive, tailored approach. We’re not just about addressing symptoms; we’re about understanding the whole person and their unique journey. What Are Some Common Concerns and Misconceptions About Teen Girls’ Mental Health?

There are several misconceptions about teen girls’ mental health. One common belief is that intense emotions or behaviors are just a phase that they’ll outgrow. However, these can be signs of deeper issues that need addressing. Another misconception is that asking for help signifies weakness. On the contrary, seeking support is a brave and vital step towards healing. At Interval Teen, we work tirelessly to dispel these myths, advocating for greater awareness and understanding. It’s about changing the narrative and ensuring that every teen girl feels empowered to reach out for the support she deserves.

CEO / Chairman of the board

Our Founder - Steve Zamarripa

Steve’s Story

I started La Ventana Treatment Programs in 2007 as a personal journey looking inward for answers on a more meaningful life.  I sold my previous business in 2005 and started my journey on giving back and helping others suffering from mental health illness and substance abuse. I had an awakening and simply wanted to create a place “to help” by providing a platform where professionals and dedicated staff could work their magic towards helping people.

Growing up, my family was plagued with mental health issues and alcoholism where nobody could express their feelings and I was taught that boys don’t cry ever and did not shed a tear myself until my early forties when I divorced and I cried for my three children. I learned to survive instead of learning how to live and that survival mode where I protected myself and did not trust anybody carried me through most of my adulthood.

Mental health issues were everywhere in my life growing up but in the 1960s and 1970s there was very little discussion around mental health and facilities to help people struggling were almost nonexistent.  Most of my childhood was filled with fear. I lived in fear of my father, in fear of family secrets, in fear of emotions and feelings and in fear of people in general. I remember being afraid of many things as a child and fear was part of growing up which led to establishing survival techniques to live.

Interval Teen was the brainchild of Rebekah Sanchez Norton, from our own clinical leadership team, and I enthusiastically  supported it when she presented it to me. I realized how my own life would have been healthier and happier had there been an Interval Teen when I was growing up.

I have learned many things since opening my first mental health facility in 2007 and I have grown tremendously as a person.  I have realized that in my family I believe there are no crimes beyond forgiveness. I have forgiven my father and my mother for their crazy dysfunctional lifestyle and for any mistakes made in raising their children. I have forgiven myself for the crimes I committed on my family, for my inability to love and for the hurt I caused so many people throughout my journey.

I am now a loved man capable of receiving love, giving love and expressing love which is more than enough for my life. This has been the greatest achievement in my recovery thus far.

I provide the community with Interval Teen in hopes of helping young women face their fears, work on their mental health issues and become strong women for the future of our society.
